Remifentanil and anaesthesia for carcinoid syndrome.

Carcinoid syndrome creates many challenges during anaesthesia, including hypertension, hypotension and bronchospasm. These challenges are less common and less severe after the routine use of octreotide. We describe the use of remifentanil as part of the anaesthetic management of a 67-yr-old man undergoing resection of a carcinoid tumour of the terminal ileum. The combination of perioperative oc...

Anaesthesia for the carcinoid syndrome: a report of nine cases.

Anaesthesia for nine patients with the carcinoid syndrome is described. With the exception of one case in which severe bronchospasm and hypertension occurred, complications were minor. Steroids, aprotonin and methotrimeprazine appear to be useful agents in the management of such patients. An anaesthetic technique employing thiopentone, pancuronium and nitrous oxide proved satisfactory.

Intra-operative carcinoid crisis: Revised anaesthesia management

Carcinoid is a tumour of amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation cells.[1] Tumours arise in the gastrointestinal tract (67.5%) and the bronchopulmonary system (25.3%). Pulmonary carcinoids account for 2% of all primary lung cancers with a 10-year survival of 82%–92%.[2] Bronchial carcinoids are perihilar and present with chest pain but can present as asthma, recurrent pneumonia, cough or hae...

Endobronchial Carcinoid and Concurrent Carcinoid Syndrome in an Adolescent Female

Endobronchial carcinoid tumors are the most common intrabronchial tumors in children and adolescents. Diagnosis is frequently made by imaging and direct visualization with flexible bronchoscopy; surgery remains the gold standard treatment, and lung-sparing resectio...

The Carcinoid Syndrome

THE first description of a carcinoid tumour was as early as 1888 (Lubarsch). Later attention was drawn to the possibility that the cells of these tumours (known as argentaffinomas) act as secretors of some "endocrine" substance. "Enteramine" or "serotonin" (5 hydroxytryptamine or 5 H.T.) was later isolated from carcinoid tumours and recently its degradation product-5 hydroxy-indoleacetic acid o...
